Estimates have been made that, annually,up to about two billion tons of dust are carriedup into the atmosphere, mainly by duststorms. One dust storm can lift and depositmore than 200 tons of dust (Griffin et al.,2002). The Arabian Peninsula has beenlisted as one of five major dust-producingregions (Idso, 1976), while Goudie (1983)adds that dust storms are frequent in thearea.
